Awareness is Key: What Everyone Should Know About Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the family

As everyone probably knows already, everyone inherits genes from their parents. This means that genes are copied from the parents to their children in the reproduction process. These genes are contained in chromosomes. The gene for DMD is found in the X chromosome, which is present in both boys and girls. Though the DMD gene is from women, this does not normally cause any problem with women or girls. Since this gender has two X chromosomes, one of the X chromosomes can cover for the defective X chromosome. However, for boys, they only have one X chromosome, so they manifest the symptoms of DMD.

There are some cases that DMD is not directly inherited, but these cases are extremely rare. Some children may have faulty genes when their cells were being formed because of a spontaneous mutation. If anyone would want to know if they are carriers of the DMD gene, they can see from a specialist if they can be tested.
