The Connection Between Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Candida

Final thoughts: Managing candida is beneficial for your health, IBD or not

Sometimes, there are more ‘bad bacteria’ microbes than there are ‘good bacteria’ microbes in the body. When this occurs, candida will begin to overgrow. Another situation may be if your gastrointestinal tract is not able to fully digest and absorb what you are ingesting, causing candida to grow and travel up to the intestine - again, promoting IBD.

Recognizing that candida overgrowth is associated with inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is the first step towards ensuring proper recovery. The next step is to restore the gut microbiome in order to facilitate healthy changes. This means addressing levels of bad bacteria or infections, restoring levels of good bacteria, removing factors that have reduced the levels of good bacteria in the first place, and healing the leaky gut. Managing candida overgrowth is imperative because it can go either way - preventing or promoting inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
