Do You have a Death Phobia? You Have Thanatophobia
Here's what to look out for
One of the ways to tell whether or not your relationship with the fear of death is healthy is to look at the symptoms. If you only think of dying every once in a while and when it comes up in your head, you feel scared, that's pretty normal; however, if you find yourself constantly circling the topic and avoiding events to protect yourself from the potential of dying, then you certainly have thanatophobia that should be treated.
Common symptoms are dread, anxiety, and distress. Others include heightened frequency of panic attacks, sweating, dizziness, heart palpitations, stomach pain, nausea, irregular heartbeats, and sensitivity to extreme temperatures.
Emotional symptoms when thanatophobia worsens include anger, sadness, guilt, and agitation. Sometimes people can feel as if they are going crazy and as if they are losing control of themselves. Sometimes thoughts of gore, death, and violence will follow and it can be hard to distinguish whether these thoughts are genuine or not.
