How Sleep Apnea Can Negatively Impact a Patient's Health
Treatment options that can help
There is no known cure for sleep apnea but there are treatments that can help the symptoms subside. The hope is that there would be more understanding around sleep apnea, especially concerning the potential correlation between the sleep disorder and age-related diseases.
In the meantime, the only known and viable treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea is through the use of a CPAP machine. Essentially, the CPAP machine blows a continuous stream of moist air into the patient’s airways through a mask that is worn over the mouth and nose during sleep. This keeps the airways open and prevents the patient from experiencing oxygen deprivation and interrupted sleep. While it’s not a cure, the CPAP machine does allow patients to experience REM sleep safely and to wake-up feeling refreshed.
