Amazingly, Barkhof has no difficulties in balancing his personal and professional life. He can switch gears from work mode to home and vice versa when he is playing with his children, cooking, playing the piano and skiing (which is his ultimate state of relaxation). He enjoys the fact that his work is recognized on a global level because he knows that he has made progressive decisions in the medical field; however, he notes that there is still so much to learn and he wants to stay involved in the process. “In multiple sclerosis, we have good therapies, but we do not know the cause so we cannot cure it, and we think we know what causes dementia, but we still don’t have efficient drug,” he said.
