This Rare Disease Can Be Misdiagnosed as Rheumatoid Arthritis
Gout
Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis. “The classic presentation of gout is podagra, an ancient term which describes the pain, swelling, warmth, and redness involving the first toe. While this is the typical joint involved, gout can attack virtually anywhere, and extended involvement of the foot and ankle, knees, wrists, elbows and fingers is not uncommon” said Azar. If left untreated, it can trigger deforming arthritis, which can imitate rheumatoid arthritis. “Soft tissue deposits of uric acid crystals called tophi are often noted on the ears as well as extensor surfaces such as the elbows. Rheumatoid nodules can have a similar distribution in the extremities” added Azar.
