Multiple Sclerosis Centers Revise MRI Guidelines
Specific timing of scans has been re-evaluated, too
Since 2009, the CMSC has addressed several issues, including the use of 3D MRI scans of the brain and the development of protocols for tracking progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, also known as PML, and severe optic nerve inflammation. The guidelines have been revised to address the specific timing of the scans for patients with PML, as well as to address recommendations for the specific timing of the scans for patients receiving medical treatment. What’s more, experts have established the value of using MRI to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments in individuals with MS. As stated for June Halper, CEO of CMSC, the center’s main objective is “to standardize the MRI protocol and make these recommendations a useful guideline for neurologists, neuro-radiologists, and related healthcare professionals during initial evaluations and during follow-up of patients with MS, and ultimately provide optimum care for those individuals dealing with this unpredictable disease.”
