Although she’s undoubtedly most famous for her portrayal of Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars franchise, Carrie Fisher’s career in film, television, and writing spanned decades and garnered her much well deserved praise. In addition to her creative talents, Fisher had spoken about her struggles with various mental illnesses, including addiction and bipolar disorder. Fisher’s novel, Postcards From the Edge is just one example of how she used her fame and abilities to create a platform for discussing the reality and seriousness of mental health. With help, Fisher was able to come to grips with her own struggles with mental illness throughout her life and move towards a more positive and healthy state of being. Tragically, Fisher died at the age of 60 in December, 2016, but her legacy in the fight to destigmatize bipolar disorder lives on.
