10 Things People Living with Ulcerative Colitis Want Others to Know

No matter how long we've had those symptoms, bloating is still uncomfortable and we can get self-conscious about it

Though patients may have had their disease for decades, it never gets old. Bloating and gas can still be very embarrassing to us, so please don't point it out. We don't need you to tell us we are bloated; the discomfort is enough for us to take notice. We may have gotten really good at hiding it from you too, but it's there. Even with the new social movements to overwhelmingly love and accept your body, the gas and bloating is still hard to accept. It's uncomfortable, even painful at times, and can be incredibly unpleasant for others too. It's not something to get used to, so please respect people who have colitis and try to ignore the bloating as much as possible. Don't make comments, don't make jokes to lighten the mood, don't try to point it out to sympathize with us - just leave it alone.
