Mathias’s birthday is a wonderful story of what can happen when individuals are willing to look past the surface and prioritize an individual, but it also represents the enormous stigma that still surrounds autism. Despite leaps and bounds in treatment and portrayals of autism in the media, it’s still condition that is largely misunderstood. It may not always be easy to interact with an autistic individual, but it’s certainly not easy to cope with a world that’s designed exclusively for neurotypical individuals. In order to overcome the stigma, we must continue educating the public about what it really means to have autism and the ways in which this condition doesn’t have to prevent an individual from living and enjoyable and fulfilling life.
