Coping with a Lack of Services After Autism Diagnosis

Tips for parents

Kathryn Smerling, Family Therapist, offers 5 helpful tips for parents with autistic children:

  1. Do not push your feelings aside. Instead, confront them by talking about them openly.
  2. Learn to be a good advocate for your child and take advantage of helpful services among your community.
  3. Take pride in every small accomplishment that your child achieves instead of comparing them to other children.
  4. Do not let autism take over your life.
  5. Get involved among the autism community and make friends with other parents who have autistic children. You can share your experiences and provide one another with much-needed support.
