Coping with a Lack of Services After Autism Diagnosis
Tips for parents
Kathryn Smerling, Family Therapist, offers 5 helpful tips for parents with autistic children:
- Do not push your feelings aside. Instead, confront them by talking about them openly.
- Learn to be a good advocate for your child and take advantage of helpful services among your community.
- Take pride in every small accomplishment that your child achieves instead of comparing them to other children.
- Do not let autism take over your life.
- Get involved among the autism community and make friends with other parents who have autistic children. You can share your experiences and provide one another with much-needed support.
