How Police Learn to Work with People with Autism
How police are taking action in Florida
The good news is that police departments around the country are responding to these problems and taking action to improve officers’ knowledge of autism. Some are in direct response to incidents, such as in Florida, where the event with Charles Kinsey took place. A few months after a North Miami police officer fired at Kinsey, Florida Governor Rick Scott passed a law requiring police departments to train officers on how to identify symptoms of autism, and importantly, how to best respond to people exhibiting those signs and symptoms. The autism training bill was unanimously approved by the Florida House in Spring of 2017, and took effect earlier this fall.
