After an initial review they narrowed the pool from over 1,000 different drugs, to 249 different well-tolerated medications that had proven potential from crossing the brain-blood barrier which means that there’s a good chance they could have some kind of impact on MS. The blood-brain barrier is what prevents different chemicals from entering the brain through the bloodstream; it’s a protective measure that the body has. So, in order to find some kind of medication that will be effective for MS, treatment providers need to find a drug that can bypass that mechanism and actually impact the brain.
