Students Raise Money for Lymphoma While Competing for Scholarship Prize
Many students have a connection in some way
This year, LLS launched the Students of the Year program in North Texas, where six local teens are working hard to raise money to save lives. The goal is to raise $95,000 by the end of the seven-week competition. “They have a huge capacity to give. Now, many of them have a family connection,” said Keith Pearson, vice chairman of LLS. “My dad was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2000, October of 2000, and I was born in 2001 so cancer has just kind of always been a part of my life. When they asked me to do this I just felt like I couldn't say no,” said Keely Campbell, a participant. Another participant by the name of Chelsea Gibson also revealed why she decided to join the program. “I recently had a friend who is going through leukemia and I see the changes that he has been going through. So, I really want to help the cause to bring better treatment for leukemia,” she said.
