Dad on a Mission to Teach Children with Autism to Swim
Camp COAST strives to help children reach their full potential
The YMCA has started a similar summer camp, called camp COAST (Children on the Autism Spectrum Together) for children with autism and developmental disabilities.
The Community YMCA is a nonprofit organization located in central New Jersey. It is dedicated to strengthening communities in areas such as young development, social responsibility, and healthy living, as well as delivering personal and social change. At the YMCA, every individual has the chance to reach their full potential.
Camp COAST is designed to meet the needs of children between the ages of 5-10 and 11-16 who are considered on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum scale. The summer camp welcomes a maximum of 15 children per week and each camper is assigned a teen intern. The teen intern accompanies them in their daily activities, which include but are not limited to: swimming, sensory games, and other various events.
The summer camp attends field trips on a weekly basis to places all around the Tampa Bay area and a Pinellas County school bus transports all of the children to and from any activities that ta take place off YMCA property.
