How to Feed a Child Athlete with Celiac Disease
Include foods that contain probiotics
Probiotics are good bacteria and help to reestablish the bacterial environment destroyed by celiac disease. Taking a daily probiotic supplement is excellent and eating probiotic foods is even better.
- Live-cultured yogurt is one of the best probiotic foods. Find brands that include goat’s milk and have an extra form of probiotics like acidophilus or lactobacilli. Excellent source of protein and easy to digest (home-made yogurt is best).
- Kefir is like yogurt but is a fermented dairy product that has goat’s milk and fermented kefir grains. Kefir's benefits include with lactobacilli and bifidus bacteria and fantastic for those with celiac disease.
- Sauerkraut is made from fermented cabbage and is rich in healthy live cultures and can reduce allergy symptoms. Sauerkraut is rich in vitamins A, B, C, and K.
- Dark chocolate is a carrier for probiotics. It protects the probiotics as they travel to the gut. Dark chocolate has other health benefits, too.
- Pickles pack a huge store of probiotics. Pickling can mean more than cucumbers. Other vegetables can benefit from the briny taste as well as the probiotic potential.
