Parents with Disabilities Fight to Keep Their Children
But her niece is still with her, and she won't stop fighting for people who are just like her
Eighteen years later, Lucas’ niece is still with her. And, this experience caused Lucas to finish law school to become an attorney. She had a master's degree and cared for other people's children all day, and yet, she was being discriminated against. If it was happening to her, it was definitely happening to other parents with disabilities.
According to a few studies, a parent with disabilities and their families are often targeted by the child welfare system. Parents with disabilities may only make up 6.23% of all parents in the United State, but 19% of their children are in foster care.
