Understanding the Connection Between Celiac Disease and Childhood Infections

Role of infectious agents in celiac disease

In one of the large-scale studies, data for Swedish children born between 1973-1997 was analyzed. This data indicated the interesting fact regarding the seasonality of celiac disease. That is the incidence of celiac disease was higher in those born in spring/summer as compared to those born in autumn/winter. It lead to the study of infections, and it was demonstrated that children who got infectious diseases early were more prone to celiac disease. But there was no relationship found between the infections and children who are above two-years-old. This research demonstrated that early childhood infections have more to do with celiac disease(2).
