Understanding the Connection Between Celiac Disease and Childhood Infections
The link found in children
As more and more evidence accumulated, it favored the link between intestinal infection at an early age and the development of celiac disease at a later age. Naturally, the respiratory infections became the next candidate for various investigations. After all, it is a well-known fact that young children contact lots of infectious agents that cause respiratory distress in them. Results of such studies were no surprise; they were rather as expected, showing a picture that is very similar to intestinal infections. These latest findings have demonstrated that respiratory infections also increase the risk of developing celiac disease. Quite like intestinal infections, the link was only found among children below two years of age(7).
