The Best Ways to Approach Sports for Children with Autism

Examples of good sports for children with autism

Some examples of sports that could be a good fit are bowling, swimming, tennis, cross country, track, and gymnastics. All of these are team sports but offer a little more independence in the competition part and a bit less social interaction. Sports such as swimming have the benefit of making your child a part of a team but also giving him or her the freedom to compete independently. These activities can lessen some of the stimulation that your child might experience as a part of another sport. The physical activity of these sports will also help keep your child healthy. It also gives them something other than school to work towards and can help them feel a sense of belonging and worth.

One article put together a list of skills or characteristics that can help children with autism succeed in sports. They call this “The 5 C’s.”
