• 10 year old son needs liver biopsy. How long until tests come back and can anesthesia hurt him?

My son's doctors say his liver is enlarged and they scheduled him for a liver biopsy. How long does it usually take for the tests to come back? Also, he's so young (10 yrs old) -- can the anesthesia hurt him in any way?

Depending on the the disease to be considered, it can take a week to a month for the results to be available. This process is controlled by the pathology department of your hospital and the availability of the pathologist with expertise in the disease in question. Can anesthesia hurt hiim? Yes, but very unlikely. Any medical procedure is associated with risks, but proper personnel will take every precaution to minimize their impact. General anesthesia is very safe. 10 years of age is not too young for anesthesia; many children need general anesthesia for various procedures, including neonates. So far, there is no study that shows harm to these patients. Most pediatric care providers understand the risks of anesthesia and the procedures themselves as well as the associated anxiety for the patients and their loved ones; these procedures are not recommended unless absolutely necessary. The benefit of the procedure usually far outweighs the risks. Having that said, you want to make sure that the anesthesiologists and nursing staff have the proper expertise and experience in handling pediatric patients to care for your child.

It depends if this biopsy is done by US guided or Laparoscopic. The latter should be using general anesthesia.
