• Ankle subluxation

I just recovered from an ankle sprain that was done by a dorsiflexion. I do cheer and when I tumble I sometimes feel a pop in my ankle. What’s the possibility it’s a subluxation

Hi! I recommend that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for further evaluation. You may need x rays or other imaging like an MRI. what you are describing sounds like a subluxation but you need an examination. After an injury I typically recommend refraining from activity until healed.

At your age and the severity of your injury, this is serious. You should be getting answers from medical people in person and. Or on the internet PS you see a minor and need parental consent and guidance.

I recommend you schedule and appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) to discuss options. I also recommend you involve at least one of your parents in the decision making.

Well first of all a subluxation is a partial dislocation of a joint. It can be temporary, or permanent if not medically treated. Next, your injury was significant on a weight bearing joint. Ligaments are small structures which hold all of our joints in proper anatomical alignment, but they have a poor or weak blood supply so they take much longer than anticipated to heal. Depending on which ligaments were injured in your case it will take at least 6 - 8 weeks to heal properly, or longer. In the mean time your ankle joint is unstable and should not be stressed with excercise or tumbling. Someone your age does not want to hear that, but that is the reality. If you keep stressing that joint then the injured ligaments may never heal properly and your ankle joint could become permanently unstable. If you haven't already you should have x-rays of that joint. I would recommend that you be examined and treated by a Podiatric Surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

You would not be able to put any weight on your foot if this was a dislocation.

My first question is was your ankle evaluated by a podiatrist or orthopedist. An MRI would show if there are torn ligaments. If these consultations have not been done, that would be the first order. Do so as soon as possible. In the meantime apply ice, elevate no running, stooping, jumping or prolonged standing. Anti-inflammatory such as Motrin to help reduce pain and swelling.

Hello..did you have an xray done? Are you still having pain? I would recommend that you get an MRI done even if the xray was normal. Subluxation can occur but need to figure out what’s the cause of it. An MRI will be able to give you more answers. Keep an ankle brace on until you have the MRI done to ensure you don’t cause more damage to any of your soft tissues.

You should currently be wearing an ankle brace for all of your activity until you can have the problem properly examined and evaluated by a Podiatrist or an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist. It is impossible to tell from a photograph what the state of your ligaments and ankle are in. You must have a clinical evaluation, and possibly imaging studies, such as an MRI to further evaluate your situation.
