Before your CT scan, your doctor will provide specific instructions based on your individual needs and the type of scan. If your CT scan involves contrast dye a special dye to enhance the images, you might need to avoid eating or drinking anything for a few hours before the scan; you might be asked to follow a specific diet. Some medications might need to be adjusted or temporarily stopped before the scan. If you have any known allergies, especially to iodine or contrast dye, inform your doctor and the radiology staff. You will likely be asked to remove any metal objects, such as jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, and hairpins, as these can interfere with the scan. Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps. If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, inform your doctor and the radiology staff immediately. It's important to drink plenty of fluids to help flush the dye out of your system.

It depends on the nature of the CT scan. For brain and lung CT scans there is no preparation. For abdominal and pelvic there is a 4-6 hour fasting requirement. The CT scheduler should tell you if there is any preparation needed.

Dear patient, Depending on the type of CT scan you are going to do. In most cases if contrast is going to be used or not. Specific instructions will be provided by your radiologist if contrast is to be used such as fasting, discontinuing certain medication, removing metallic objects and informing your doctor of any medical conditions or allergies. As a general rule, follow any specific instruction provided by your radiologist or the radiology department. If you will receive intravenous contrast for your CT Exam you may need to have a blood test done to evaluate kidney function, if you are a diabetic they may ask you to discontinue metformin etc.etc. As usual answering your question does not constitute medical advice and is provided only for informational purpose.
