I took 14 aspirin pills in a suicide attempt in 2021 and I've had tinnitus ever since. The doctors told me it's temporary. An ear specialist told me he had someone who took aspirin and the ringing stopped after two years. Will my tinnitus last forever
Im really sorry youre going through this. Based on your story, it sounds like your tinnitus was triggered by aspirin overdose, which is known to cause temporary or sometimes longterm ear damage called ototoxicity.
In most cases, aspirinrelated tinnitus improves over time, especially if no permanent damage occurred. Since its been 2 years, theres still hope it may fade gradually some people report improvement even after several years, like your specialist mentioned.
However, if it doesnt fully go away, there are treatments to manage it, like
Sound therapy or white noise to reduce awareness of the ringing.
CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help cope with emotional stress caused by tinnitus.
ENT followup and audiologist support.
So no, it doesnt always last forever but even if it stays, it can become much easier to live with. Please dont lose hope, and stay connected to your doctor.
Tinnitus can certainly be caused from some medications, like aspirin. Researchers have found that people who have an abnormally large dose of aspirin, or an overdose, are far more likely to report tinnitus as a symptom afterwards. I have had patients with chronic tinnitus find relief from their symptoms when using sound machines, when engaging in exercise more, or when finding a therapeutic outlet such as meditation or creating art. It is impossible to know how long your tinnitus will last, but it is something that can be managed.
Aspirin is ototoxic (toxic to the ear) in large quantities. Fortunately it it transient and you should recover spontaneously. I hope that you find yourself in a better space and you are receiving support and help for the emotional pain that led you to this situation. Angela R. Tinnitus should be gone once you finish taking the aspirin. Have you been exposed to loud noises? If you expose yourself to noise you must use noise protection. You should also see an audiologist or ear nose and throat doctor to have your hearing checked. Sincerely, Natalie Fernandez-Roque
