• Can Fluoxetine cause insomnia?

My 20-year-old son has been taking fluoxetine regularly as a treatment for his depression. However, I have been seeing him waking up every day at 2 am. Is this a normal effect of fluoxetine?

Hello,
Yes, from the common adverse reactions to Fluoxetine is insomnia. It’s recommended to take it in the morning instead to avoid this side effect.

Yes, among all the other side effects of Fluoxetine, INSOMNIA has been reported to be the most prevalent. I would suggest possibly changing the time of day your son receives his daily dose in efforts to ensure quality sleep at night, which would inadvertently contribute to improving mood.

Hello,

Yes, fluoxetine can cause insomnia. Lexi-Comp reports that 10%-30% of patients experience this as a side effect.
