Can heartbeat be a habit
After years of heavy night time drinking I ended up in the hospital. Luckily no serious damage and have been prescribed meds. It's been 6 days now and at night around the time I would normally start drinking my heartbeat becomes harder and I can feel it beating in my whole upper body. Is it possible it's just doing this out of habit?

This sounds like alcohol withdrawals. Avoid alcohol. If symptoms are tolerated that is great, otherwise see your primary care provider for more help.
Not out of habit
Your heart is perhaps responding to the alcohol and sympathetic drive - increased force of contraction , heart rate .
