Brain tissue that has died cannot regenerate, however, adjacent brain cells may be able to help in recovering lost function. Typically, the most recovery comes in the first six months after the stroke. Physical therapy is extremely helpful with the recovery process.

Recovery of neurological function is possible after a stroke. Many factors, however, are involved including age, location of stroke, degree of damage to the neural structures, etc. Generally, the maximum medical improvement is in about a year to a year and a half out from the stroke.
