Shoulder surgery can be done with regional anesthesia, such as an interscalene block, with or without sedation. Most patients undergoing an interscalene block for shoulder surgery also have a general anesthetic or sedation for the surgical portion. The interscalene (or equivalent brachial plexus blocks) block is a nerve block with local anesthetic to numb the area of surgery
