• Can you have hernia surgery without anesthesia?

I am a 42 year old male. I want to know if you can have hernia surgery without anesthesia?

Yes, if the surgeon and hernia are amenable to an open procedure with local only.

It would not be pleasant! Several strong men would have to hold the patient down and the surgeon would have to work quickly and have a strong stomach to hear the screaming of the patient. That is how they did it in the old days before the invention of anesthetic agents.

No; some hernias can be repaired under local anesthesia, but the vast majority will require general or regional anesthesia (spinal or epidural block). Since most hernias are now repaired by a laparoscopic technique, general anesthesia is most commonly used.

Sure you can, but it will be a horrifying experience and I don’t know a surgeon who would do that. Perhaps a neighbor?

Unfortunately, no. Hernia repairs cannot be done in an office setting, or without anesthesia.
