I am not clear about your foot problem. If you had nerve damage, there are symptoms of loss of sensation (no pain), muscle weakness/atrophy and possibly deformity. Then you function up to your physical limits, sports or not. I really doubt that you have "nerve damage". You might have pain which is NEVER a nerve problem. I can't comment further without knowing what problems you have.
