My mom has zero immune system and is currently in her 8th year of monthly Vidaza treatment for MDS. I live in another state with a college kid who comes home on the weekends. What is the recommendation of being around my mom? I will not go because I'm terrified of getting her sick. She and my stepdad are pissed but I want to keep her safe.
Hi, thanks for reaching out. The question is how weak her immune system is. I am sure she has some degree of immunocompromising, given her underlying MDS and whatever Vidaza affects her immune system. It would be nice to know if her neutrophil count is normal (neutrophils count our body against a bacterial infection). If her neutrophil count is normal, and if you are asymptomatic, then there’s no need for special consideration other than regular hygiene. If not, it is better to wear a regular mask around your mom.
