A thyroid biopsy is usually a fine needle inserted into the neck with a syringe. The needle is no more painful than a venipuncture and even local anesthesia is not necessary. Sometimes a surgeon does a biopsy surgically for diagnosis but this is not usually necessary.

Thyroid biopsy can be done without anesthesia. It's called, Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy. The thyroid report takes 24 -48 hrs.

A needle aspiration would not require anesthesia. A needle biopsy may be under local anesthesia. Open biopsy is generally done under general anesthesia..
