I will have a prostate biopsy. Do you need to be sedated for a prostate biopsy?

Prostate biopsy could be performed with just local anesthetics without any sedation. Most biopsies are done in the urologist’s office.

Yes. General anesthesia is administered to make it easier for the patient to stay still during the procedure. Thank you.

Local anesthesia, without sedation is usually adequate.

Study a little bit concerning where those needles will placed to get a prostate biopsy. It's rarely one, single 'poke' with a needle big enough to an adequate amount of tissue. 1 prostatic nodule? 2? 4? It's often 4 samples per nodule, so frequently 16-20 (often including some 'normal' tissue biopsies) 'pokes' in your perineum (the area between your Anus and your scrotum. Would you like to be sedated for that?

No.

Depends of extent of biopsy, but normally conscious sedation is given.
