Yes. If an ankle is dislocated, it will be unstable without surgery

An ankle dislocation implies serious damage and joint instability. A simple cast will not suffice. Surgical intervention is usually required. Get Outlook for iOS<https://aka.ms/o0ukef>

There are many different types of dislocations of the ankle joint. It depends on the amount of injury/damage to soft tissue structure such as ligaments, joint capsule and tendons. This is best to be evaluated by a specialist and possible MRI to determine extent of damage. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM Texas Foot WorksDallas, Athens and Gun Barrel City Texas214-340-8885

We would have to look at x-rays to determine the course of treatment.

The ankle will need to be relocated to the proper position. I recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) for evaluation and treatment options.

Depends on the degree of damage from the dislocation. An MRI would be a great diagnostic tool to determine the damage to the area. If there are no overt signs of large fractures associated then I recommend regenerative medicine options instead of surgery which can restore the structure and function of the joint and allows you to continue to walk.

Ankle dislocations typically will result in injury to the ankle ligaments around the ankle joint. The severity of the soft tissue injury will dictate the type of treatment needed. Radiographs and MRI will be able to assess the extent of the injury before considering surgical intervention.
