I had a tooth extraction yesterday. I rinse with salt water. Does rinsing with salt water prevent dry socket?
No, but it promote healing when used at least 24 hours after the extractions. Sometimes some people are prone to dry sockets, particularly post-menopausal women and bottom teeth have a higher propensity. Following your dentist’s post-op instructions does. Continue to apply pressure on gauze - 40 minutes right after extraction - to stop bleeding, promoting a clot. To protect that clot for the next 24 hours: no spitting or rinsing after the extraction, no smoking, do not drink anything with carbonation (beer or pop), stay away from spicy foods, and stay from cold/warm foods. Remember, if you develop more discomfort ~ two-three days later, contact your dentist for relief.
