Dry sockets are very painful and not much helps (i.e., Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Ice, Heat). Normal pain from extractions usually feel like a bruise, but are not incapacitating or difficult to control with normal pain relievers.
Dry socket usually happens around the 3-4th day after the extraction. It usually occurs in lower back teeth, and happens more frequently in smokers. The pain is much, much worse than what you felt on day 2.
