I am a 39 year old female. I want to know how do you test for knee instability?

With the patient resting, usually on their back, allow the leg to relax in a bent position. Pull the lower leg forward and back and side to side. Every motion tests a different ligament. There are more complicated maneuvers as well.

Physical examination maneuvers primarily testing side to side and front to back stability. Typically performed by physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.

They’re clinical, hard to explain, though. The unstable knee can give way or hurt. Please see a sports surgeon.
