• How long does a hernia mesh last?

I am a 40 year old male. I want to know how long does a hernia mesh last?

Hi, Dr. Willkomm here.

Hernia mesh should last forever. It is possible, however, to develop a recurrent hernia if the mesh moves or shifts.

It depends on the mesh ingredients, but your body should incorporate it for life.

Depends on the type used. It can last 10-30 years. Thanks

There are different types of mesh, but the most common is permanent. Absorbable mesh typically goes away in 3-6 months and is typically only used in the setting of an infection or an open wound. Biologic mesh will absorb/incorporate within about 2 years and typically also has limited use.
