Following inguinal hernia surgery patients should avoid heavy lifting or straining for 4-6 weeks depending on the repair either minimally invasive or open. However patients should be walking around on post op day 1 and not be on bed rest to avoid blood clots.

You dont need to rest. You have to walk and be up and about, but you cannot lift, should not get sick and start coughing, do not get constipated.
