Hello,

Scaling and root planing is repeated only if there is no improvement in pocket depths (gum health). Maintenance is usually done every three months until improvements noticed.

It is recommended that a dental prophylaxis (cleaning) be completed every 6 months for the majority of people. On occasion, your dentist or hygienist may recommend a cleaning more often, every 3-4 months, if you have high amounts of build up or inflammation. If you had a deep cleaning, you should be receiving a cleaning every 3 months for at least a year following periodontal treatment.

it depends on your health, diet, habits, and home care. If you are thoroughly cleaning your teeth a couple times a day, your gums are bright pink and never bleed, you may be able to do well with a simple cleaning. With smoking and a sugar habit, if your home care is a bit lacking, systemic health issues, you likely need more help to keep your mouth infection free. Mouth infections like gum disease and decay ["tooth eating bacteria"] can double, even quadruple, your probability of heart attack and stroke.
