This is a major operation but with the new technologies and techniques, it is safe and can be done.

The majority of right sided colon polyps are removed via endoscopic muscosal resection by gastroenterologist via a colonoscope. This is less invasive as there is no abdominal incision. The polyps are removed with a snare and the site marked so that if that polyp comes back with evidence of high grade dysplasia and evidence of invasion you might be referred to a general surgeon for a full thickness colon resection.

It depends on the extent of what needs to be done. But usually it is done laproscopically.

Any surgery is a risk, but if you follow directions from the doctor (who has a good reputation), things should go well. Good luck and be sure to read the information given and ask questions if you have concerns.
