I will have a gastroscopy. Is gastroscopy painful without anesthesia?

Imagine having to swallow a plumber's snake while awake. That is what an upper endoscopy essentially is. If you think you can handle that, then don't have sedation. Otherwise, you'll benefit from being sedated during your procedure.

Not painful but possibly uncomfortable. I'd say spring for some anesthesia.

Yes, very painful.

It's not painful but the stimulation of the back of the throat and the gag reflex will be too much to handle without sedation.
