• Is it safe to do a CT scan on an elderly patient?

My mother is 86 years old and is getting a CT scan and MRI to help identify the cause of her dementia. Are these tests safe to be done on patients of her age?

Yes unless kidney disease. Would suggest a SPECT brain scan as a better study.

Yes unless your mother has renal dysfunction.

Yes. Risks are basically the same, with probably decrease in some risks.

The short answer is, absolutely, yes. She will be screened for common contraindications (such as presence of pacemaker, etc.) by the technical staff. But, to answer your question, it is a resounding yes.
