This year, I noticed that I had "bald" small stripes on the side of my head; it wasn't particularly noticeable because I had long hair for 8 months, so I barely noticed it but didn't give it much weight. My mother noticed the same stripes at the back of my head after I got a haircut yesterday. Is this a symptom of alopecia? When I had long hair, I noticed hair on the pillows, but my hair continued to grow normally, so nothing I worried about. My sister, who does not have these stripes, sheds more hair than I do, so I think it's normal. I don't think it's my family genes because no one (even the older adults) is bald, so it's either alopecia or I'm extremely unlucky.
The bald stripes you noticed could be a sign of alopecia, especially alopecia areata, which causes small patches of hair loss. It often starts suddenly and in specific spots, like on the side or back of your head.
However, shedding hair on pillows can be normal, and it might not always mean hair loss is happening. But if the patches don't grow back or you see more thinning, it's best to see a doctor to figure out what's going on.
