My mother is 59 years old and has been falling asleep on the toilet for as long as I can remember. She was taking Ambien but thought that was the cause so she stopped. When she goes into the bathroom she is very much awake, as soon as she sits down she falls asleep. She is not fainting, she wakes up when she is spoken to. She has fallen off the toilet many times causing cracked ribs and many bruises. What could this possibly be? She is scared something might really be wrong, she is wondering if she should just wear a pull-up to bed and use that to go to the bathroom. She is about to have foot surgery and I am really concerned about her falling and not being able to get up.
She should be evaluated for Narcolepsy.
