• Needle stick injury?

I work at a vet clinic and was doing vaccines today. I went to throw away the needle I was using and accidentally poked myself with it. The needle was used for a subcutaneous vaccine on a dog. I believe it was the influenza vaccine. I quickly doused it in alcohol and used the surgical scrub we use in the clinic. I then put antibiotic ointment on it and a bandaid. Should I be worried about any infections or transmissions?

Hi there! You shouldn't be worried as you took the proper precautions after your injury. However, if you see increased swelling, redness and pain for more than 3 days, I would recommend contacting your physician to see if you need further treatment.

I would consult with the Vet at the clinic about the health status of the animal and if you should have any concerns. I would also fill out an unusual occurrence document and turn it into the safety officer for review. Document everything and keep in your health record.

Although dogs can carry Hepatitis, it's quite rare, and they do not carry HIV. You did the right thing, especially if the dog is healthy.

I doubt the dog would have any blood borne diseases that might be shared with you. It is basically a question of wound infection. if it is a small stick (less than 0.5 cm ) then only local care and an update of your tetanus if not received in the last ten years. No antibiotics unless it begins to appear infected.

I think you should be ok and would not worry. I suspect you are immune to
Hep B, surface Antibody detectable- which is always a good status to know.
I think I would reach out to your local veterinary clinic to be sure there
is nothing I dont know about from dogs.
Best!
