• Shingles and Now This...

I am a 37 year old healthy female. I work too hard, maybe I party a little too much on the weekends, but for the most part life is good. I have a HIGH tolerance for pain and really just let everything work itself out. I do see my doctor for some intestinal issues that I was born with but it's all manageable.

While I was experiencing some stress at my job, I got shingles. Coincidence? I got through the shingles but then this past Friday, I thought I was going to pass out. I had such sharp pain in my head - it felt like a shock or a knot. I'm a bit foggy (for about a week) and a little dizzy.

I went to the ER over the weekend (which is a 1st) but they sent me home. My vitals were fine. They suggested I go for an MRI. I am a little worried.

Do you think the shingles and this pain is related? I imagine sharp pain in my head can be pretty serious. Thoughts?

Hi. I hope youre feeling better. Your symptoms, including the head, pain and feelings of passing out are difficult to put together. That is a good thing. It does not sound dangerous. Stress of any kind, including a viral syndrome like shingles, certainly contribute to symptoms like yours. The idea of an MRI is an easy go to test that is recommended When doctors dont know what else to do. I believe your symptoms are real, and most likely related to stress and combined with symptoms of a viral syndrome, which is what shingles is. I would recommend you continue with your self cares. Do all the good things, stay hydrated, get your sleep, etc. I dont think an MRI is necessary.

First, the shingles and head pain are not related. Pain from shingles is always associated with a rash. Secondly, in general, the worse the head pain, the less likely it is from a brain problem. The brain itself has no pain fibers. They operate on the brain, cut through with a scalpel with patients who are wide awake they dont feel any pain. Causes of severe head pain are migraines, neuralgia, neck problems and similar issues. Rarely an unruptured aneurysm can do that An MRI of the brain and simultaneously an MRA MR of the arteries is appropriate, but likely will be normal. Then attention to the cause of the pain and treatment should be done. Leon Rosenberg
