• Should my thyroid be visible

Everywhere I've looked has told me how to perform the thyroid check, but just said "tell your doctor immediately if you see any suspicious lumps." I don't know what's suspicious.

No, your thyroid should not be visible. It is is, it is definitely swollen, and the reason should be assessed.
