I am a 59 year old female. I want to know what complications can occur to elderly patients after having surgery involving general anesthesia?
It depends on many things.Type and length of surgery, any preexisting medical conditions and you body chemistry. In a healthy 59 year old patient there are no studies to highlight long term complications. If you have any chronic illness it can get aggravated under stress to your body during surgery and anesthetic. For example if you have heart disease it can depress your heart function, can cause rhythm problems lower your blood pressure but most of them can be treated in perioperative time.Long term consequences are uncommon. If you have any specific concerns that you can request a consult with the anesthesiologist through your surgeon and they can answer specific concerns.
