I have a high fever. What is the treatment for a high fever?
Tylenol
Fever is a common reason people come to the emergency department. Fever is typically preceded by a rapid heartbeat and rapid breathing some patients even describe shortness of breath. This is the body generating energy to raise its temperature. If not allergic, use of acetaminophen paracetamol, Tylenol and ibuprofen Motrin/ advil is important to reset the bodys thermostat. High fever can lead to confusion, altered behavior, and in young children or individuals with a seizure disorder, can cause convulsions. Fever is usually but not always due to an infection. It is best to have fever medically evaluated so that the infection can be diagnosed, be treated if the infection is treatable with antibiotics or antivirals, and to ensure that any life threatening condition is either diagnosed and treated or excluded
To keep your body cool and avoid dehydration, drink a lot of water. Make sure you get enough sleep. Dress comfortably and loosely; don't overdress. To reduce your body temperature, take over-the-counter drugs such naproxen Aleve, Naprosyn, or others, ibuprofen Advil, Motrin, or others, or acetaminophen Tylenol, or others. Apply a bath that is just warmnot coldor dab the forehead and wrists with moist washcloths. Alcohol can exacerbate dehydration, so stay away from it. Consume light, easily digested foods. Children and teenagers should not use aspirin since it increases their risk of developing Reye's syndrome.
Fluid hydration, antipyretic medication such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Also, identifying the cause of your high fever is most important, fever that is not controlled with medication or home measures requires a visit with a provider.
A fever can usually be treated with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) to lower the temperature. However, if it persists above 103°F (39.4°C), or is accompanied by severe symptoms (e.g., confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath), seek medical attention.
Fevers can be temporarily treated with antipyretics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. However the most important issue for any fever is figuring out the source of the fever (infection, autoimmune disease, cancer, etc). If you are experiencing a fever and not sure why, you should see your doctor.
I advise you to drink plenty of fluids such as water, juice or broth. Second you should wear light clothing avoid jackets sweaters or coats unless extreme cold weather is present inside or outside and no available heat is present. Remember you want to allow your body to release sweat which helps to bring down a very high fever. Please make sure you get plenty of rest and don’t engage in excessive exercise which can increase sweating and fluid loss and lead to dehydration. If not allergic to Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen you may take your preference of one of these over the counter medications. Tylenol(acetaminophen) may be taken orally every four to six hours for fever and body aches. Ibuprofen can be taken orally every six to eight hours depending on the dosage. These over the counter medications may also be alternated to help bring your elevated fever down. Please follow up with a doctor or medical provider if your fever is greater than 103.0 degrees Fahrenheit, and if you are unable to take Tylenol, or ibuprofen, and or keep down fluids. Also if you experience other concerning symptoms along with your increased fever such as headaches, nausea and vomiting that does not subside.within a day or two please follow up with a doctor or medical provider.
